How do you prefer your whisky? Neat? With a drop or two of water? It’s #WorldWhiskyDay, an opportunity to experiment different ways to enjoy this classic spirit. Why not elevate your whisky experience with a delicious cocktail? Whether you like sweet, smoky, or something with a punch (no pun intended!) you can craft a tasty beverage that suits your palate. Here are a few cocktails to inspire you. Tune into your mixology mastermind and get those creative juices flowing!

Refresh yourself with a “Lindores Abbey Mule”. Made with Lindores MCDXCIV Lowlands Single Malt, fresh lime juice, angostura bitters and topped off with ginger beer, garnished with fresh mint. This whisky is super smooth with delicate flavours of apple, vanilla and dried fruits, a delightful twist on this classic cocktail.

For something a little smoky, the Elements of Islay “Clocked Off” will entice your palate. Made with the Elements of Islay Peat Pure Islay, passion fruit puree and agave syrup, shake it up with some ice, then garnish with a slice of passion fruit. The smoky, fruity, spicy character of this whisky blended with the passion fruit is a charmer.

If you want to up your game, then try a Glenfarclas 105 “Green Grass Fizz”. This unique cocktail is made with muddled sugar snap peas, agave syrup, fresh lemon juice, Glenfarclas 105 Cask Strength Single Malt, shaken with ice, strain and top off with sparkling coconut water. The rich flavours of sherried fruit & sweet spice of this whisky make this a fun and tasty tropical cocktail.

Want a slightly smoky slightly sweet treat for around the campfire? Try the Port Askaig “Ode to Chranachan”. Made with Port Askaig 8 Year Old Single Malt, Raspberry Syrup, top with frothed warm oat milk (or milk of choice), garnish with raspberries. The elegant citrus and soft smoky notes from this whisky will have you savouring this warming cocktail.

Pinot Grigio, also known as Pinot Gris, is typical

Pinot Grigio, also known as Pinot Gris, is typically identified as fresh and crisp with zippy acidity and notes of citrus, apple and minerality. However, don’t be fooled, as this varietal offers various styles depending where it is from. Today is Pinot Grigio Day (or Pinot Gris day) Pinot Gris being the French name and Grigio the Italian name. Outside of France and Italy you’ll find these two names used interchangeably around the globe and the name often represents the style of the wine. Pinot Grigio being associated with light, fresh with brilliant acidity and more citrus and tree fruit driven. Pinot Gris is often a fuller fruitier style with notes of stone fruits, floral and honey. Either way, you can’t go wrong with this palate pleasing varietal. Today we celebrate with two Pinot Gris selections, the Pierre Sparr Reserve Pinot Gris from Alsace, France and the Dirty Laundry Pinot Gris from British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.

Pierre Sparr, located in the heart of Alsace, a region known for its Pinot Gris among other white varietals. With its unique terroir, the Pierre Sparr Reserve Pinot Gris is expressive and rich with flavour. Highly aromatic with a nose of peach, apricot, white flowers and toasty notes, this wine is very enticing. Fresh, elegant and flavourful with medium body and a nice long finish. Notes of peach, apricot, minerality and touch of sweetness and spice to round it out. A fantastic wine for any foodie! Great with white meats, foie gras, or pasta with truffles.

Another popular region for Pinot Gris is right here in Canada’s Okanagan Valley where this is one of the most planted varietals. Dirty Laundry Vineyards is located in Summerland, BC and their Pinot Gris is made with fruit selected from their estate vineyards. This medium bodied wine offers a bouquet of pear, green apple and touch of citrus. Well balanced with beautiful acidity and flavours of green apple, nectarine and herbaceous notes with a nice crisp finish. Perfect for a patio, but also a fantastic food wine, a great match with roasted chicken, salads or seafood.

What’s a perfect summer sipper that pairs well with sunshine and seafood? Did you say Sauvignon Blanc!? It’s International Sauvignon Blanc Day, and even if the sun isn’t shining where you are, this wine will certainly bring some sunshine to your glass! This widely adored varietal is originally from the Loire Valley in France, but has established itself in many wine regions around the world. Known for its vibrant aromas of citrus, tropical fruits and herbaceous notes and its bright palate with flavours that include grapefruit, passion fruit, melon, peach and gooseberry. These palate friendly wines pair with an array of dishes. Our chosen wine for today is the Vina Chocalan Origin Gran Reserva Sauvignon Blanc which comes Malvilla, San Antonio Valley, Chile.

With the vineyard located only 4kms from the Pacific Ocean, this cool climate location is perfect for Sauvignon Blanc. This wine definitely represents a sense of place and offers lots of character as during vinification it spends some on lees and 10% of the wine ages 3 – 4 months in barrel. The result is a beautifully aromatic wine with a nose of pink grapefruit, lime, minerality, herbaceous notes and touch of salinity. The palate mimics the nose, is well balanced, with great structure and acidity. Fresh, flavourful and pairs perfectly with oysters, seafood, salads, goat cheese, appies and a patio!

Happy International Viognier Day! In the 1980’s, Yalumba took a leap of faith when they planted 3 acres of Viognier in the Eden Valley of South Australia. With a climate similar to that of the Rhone Valley, they felt the Eden Valley was an excellent place to begin their Viognier journey. With ingenuity, passion, patience, research and development, Viognier turned out to be an incredible success for Yalumba! Over the past decades, Yalumba has become a benchmark for this varietal around the world and they have been responsible for putting Australian Viognier on the map.

This versatile varietal is definitely a conversation starter and a superb match to many dishes. Known for its bold aromas and complex flavours that range from floral, to tropical, with stone fruits and sweet spices this wine can also be light and fresh or rich and silky in texture. Today we choose to celebrate with the Yalumba Y Series Viognier. An expressive wine that shows the purity of the varietal with an enticing nose of stone fruits, honeysuckle and ginger. The palate is fresh and fruity with notes of apricot, peach and honeysuckle. Smooth, delicious, and pairs perfectly with friends, and range of foods from a beet & goat cheese salad to curried dishes and so much in between.
