It’s International Whisk(e)y Day, a day to enjoy

It’s International Whisk(e)y Day, a day to enjoy a dram of your favourite whisky and the day to celebrate the life of renowned beer and whisky journalist, Michael Jackson who was an influential figure in the world of whisky and has been referred to as the best beer and whisky writer in the world. With his passion for sharing his knowledge of everything whisky, it would have been an honour to meet Michael Jackson and imaginably quite an honour to have him write about your whisky, distillery or in the case of Lindores Abbey Distillery, the history of your locale.

Lindores Abbey Distillery is located in Fife in the Scottish Lowlands which has become known as the “spiritual home of scotch whisky” with it’s remarkable history. The abbey itself dates back to 1191, but it was in 1494 where whisky became an integral part of the story. During this time, the abbey was inhabited by the Tironensian monks and in 1494 the first documentation of whisky distillation was recorded at Lindores Abbey which was written in the Exchequer Roll, a record of all financial transactions that took place at the abbey. It stated; “To Brother John Cor, 8 bolls of malt, wherewith to make aqua vitae for the King.” We know Scotch Whisky was formerly known as aqua vitae, and 8 bolls of malt would produce roughly 400 bottles of whisky. It’s likely whisky distillation was taking place before this time, but this was the first record.

Where does Michael Jackson fit into the story? In the year 2000 Mr. Jackson visited the McKenzie Smith family, the custodians of the ruins of Lindores Abbey where he spent time exploring the ruins. In 2001 he published his book “Scotland and its Whiskies” and on page 170 you will find a picture of the Abbey and the chapter begins with “For the whisky-lover, it is a pilgrimage”. When the McKenzie Smith family discovered the history of the abbey and its significance in the world of whisky this inspired the birth of Lindores Abbey Distillery which opened its doors in 2017, reintroducing the flow of whisky to this landmark.

Riesling is a varietal known for its expressive hi

Riesling is a varietal known for its expressive highly aromatic characteristics as well as it’s brilliant acidity. With it’s origins in Germany, Riesling has found it’s home in many parts of the world offering a unique expression reflecting the terroir of each region that it’s grown in. This incredibly versatile grape is also produced in many styles from sweet to bone dry and everything in between offering something for every palate and making this a varietal worth exploring. Today we celebrate International Riesling Day, also known as Riesling’s Birthday, as March 13th 1435 is said to be the first documented history of this grape. A great day to taste and discover the ranges of Riesling. Our pick for the day is the Pewsey Vale Vineyard Riesling from the Eden Valley, South Australia.

Pewsey Vale Is all about Riesling! In fact, that is the only varietal this winery produces. Their first vines were planted in 1847 which also made these the first grape vines to be planted in the Eden Valley. In 1961 the Hill-Smith family revitalized these vineyards and the stunning single vineyard wines of Pewsey Vale came to life. Everything about this vineyard makes it ideal for Riesling, its elevation, cooler climate, soil and slope of the vineyard are all the secrets to their success along with the talents of winemaker Louisa Rose, who has been crafting these wines since 1996.

The Pewsey Vale Vineyard Riesling is a classic representation of this region, with its refreshing dry style. Beautifully aromatic with lemon, lime, herbal notes and white flowers followed by a palate that is crisp yet rich with citrus flavours like lime and grapefruit, rosemary and minerality. Perfectly balanced acidity and a long finish make this a fantastic match with oysters and other seafood or spicy cuisine. A delightful way to celebrate this day!

Single Farm Origin Series – The whiskies from this range will really let you delve in and discover the Irish terroir. Single Farm, much like a single vineyard in winemaking, means the barley is sourced from one Irish farm such as Hook Head or Lakefield. While each of these whiskies are produced in the same way, when you taste through this range you will experience the difference in flavours based on each farms specific location and terroir. Each bottle of whisky comes with a specific Teireoir Code allowing you to verify the bottles detailed composition and place of origin.

Arcadian Series– This line up includes Organic and Biodynamic whiskies allowing you to experience the flavours that are a result of these agricultural farming methods which are also very common in the world of winemaking. The certified Organic Gaia and Biodynamic Luna are produced with barley coming from a handful of farms practicing these agricultural methods.

Cuvee – The Cuvee is known for its complexity, sophistication and layers of flavour. A culmination of barley sourced from 25 single farms bringing an array of distinct flavours together to create a very compelling whisky, likened to a great Bordeaux blend.

The Languedoc-Roussillon region of the south of Fr

The Languedoc-Roussillon region of the south of France is located along the Mediterranean sea spanning from the Rhone Valley to the Spanish border. This area is known for its sunshine, culture and history, but did you know it’s also the largest wine producing region in France? With its Mediterranean climate, varied landscapes and soils, the Languedoc-Roussillon is able to grow a range of varietals and thanks to winemaker Gerard Bertrand, this region has made its mark on the map as a prestigious wine producing region. Gerard Bertrand has just been named Master Winemaker of the Year 2023 by the Drinks Business which is a reflection of his dedication, passion, attention to detail and quest for excellence in winemaking. He is also a leader in biodynamics, organic farming and sustainability with a clear vision to preserve the environment creating quality wines that reflect the terroir.

One of the key varietals grown in this region is Syrah. Like the Rhone Valley, the Languedoc is known for their blended wines and Syrah plays an important role to many of the wines and especially those of Gerard Bertrand. Syrah is Known for its full body, rich colour, fruity and peppery notes and it adds structure, flavour and personality to any blend. Syrah is found in many of Gerard’s wines adding to the character of each blend. As we pay tribute to Gerard For his achievement of Master Winemaker of the Year, today we also recognize International Syrah day, so we celebrate with a wine that is symbolic of the values of Gerard Bertrand, the Clos d’Ora. This unique wine is certified biodynamic and organic representing a sense of place and the innovation, hard work and dreams of Gerard Bertrand. A stunning wine that has Syrah as its backbone, blended with Grenache and Mourvèdre. Powerful, yet elegant, with red and black fruits, floral notes, sweet spice, leather and peppery notes. Smooth and flavourful with a long savoury finish. The perfect wine for an honourable occasion!
